چکیده

Two methods are developed to average V and I Stokes parameters over a circular sensor aperture collecting light scattered from an optically active sphere. One method uses a two-dimensional numerical integration of Bohren’s theory in scalar form, which explicitly shows the connection with Mueller matrix elements. The second method uses expansions of vector spherical harmonics in Bohren’s theory to integrate over apertures of any size without convergence checks since numerical integration is avoided. Equations simplifying the analytical results for 4π scattering are obtained. Sample computations of average Stokes parameters are performed with both methods, and agreement to six decimal places is obtained.

Differential scatter of left and right circularly polarized light by optically active particulate systems.

Because of the many heterogeneous systems which are of interest to the chemist and biochemist, the problems of distortions in circular dichroism patterns have been investigated. Specifically in this communication it is shown with a relatively well-characterized particular system (a suspension of alpha-helical poly-L-glutamic acid) that there is a measurable differential scatter of left and righ...

Scattering of a tightly focused beam by an optically trapped particle.

Near-forward scattering of an optically trapped 5-mum-radius polystyrene latex sphere by the trapping beam was examined both theoretically and experimentally. Since the trapping beam is tightly focused, the beam fields superpose and interfere with the scattered fields in the forward hemisphere. The observed light intensity consists of a series of concentric bright and dark fringes centered abou...

Collection of emission from an oscillating dipole inside a sphere: analytical integration over a circular aperture.

We describe a method for integrating analytically, over a circular aperture, the emission from an oscillating dipole inside a dielectric sphere. The model is useful for investigating fluorescence, Raman, or other emission from molecules inside of spherical particles or droplets. The analysis is performed for two cases: (a) the dipole emits from a fixed orientation, and (b) the dipole emits from...

Determining the Scattering Properties of Vertically-Structured Nepheloid Layers from the Fusion of Active and Passive Optical Sensors

The optical impacts of a scattering benthic boundary layer are fairly obvious to in situ and remote sensing techniques that measure ocean color. These scattering layers cause an increase in light reflectance from positions above the benthos, a reduction in the penetrating photons to the bottom, and a decrease in photons scattered from the bottom back toward the surface. The net result is that t...

Meteoroid head echo polarization features studied by numerical electromagnetics modeling

[1] Meteoroid head echoes are radar returns associated with scatter from the dense plasma surrounding meteoroids striking the Earth’s atmosphere. Such echoes are detected by high power, large aperture (HPLA) radars. Frequently such detections show large variations in signal strength that suggest constructive and destructive interference. Using the ARPA Long‐Range Tracking and Instrumentation Ra...
